Q: What sheet metal guage should I use on a 1970 Pontiac Firebird ?
I am going to fabricate a patch panel, and would like to know if I should use 16 gauge or 18 gauge. The patch will go on the lower rear windshield near the trunk lid.
A: You should use 22 gauge which is the standard guage for most vehicles from the 1970's and up. Thicker gauge than that would make it very difficult to bend in anyway to the form you need and would be too thick compared to the metal already on the car making it hard to grind flat to fill over and make level to the area. You will end up grinding the welds away before you got 16 or 18 guage to be level and smooth enough. Plus heating up the panel your welding it too much and warping it. Steel gauge is similar to wire gauge. the lower the number the thicker it is.
You can purchase 22 gauge sheet metal at most auto parts stores and autobody paint supply stores also carry it.
They also sell panel bond adhessive which can be used in place of welding the patch if you dont have a welder. Just remember that it comes with mixing tips that you will also need to buy. It drys very quickly so be sure you have the panel fitting just the way you need it before applying it to the back of the patch.
Good luck!
Q: What's the widest tire you can fit on a 1970-1978 Pontiac Firebird without sticking out past the fender?
Please no guessing, I need solid facts from people who have experience with these cars. I've seen two birds in HPP magazine with 17x8 245/45/17 (4" backspace) up front and 17x9.5 275/40/18 (5" backspace) out back. The thing that perplexes me is it doesn't state if these tire/wheel combos required mods or not.

No guessing !
Camaros and Firebirds are almost identicle and have ther same inner and outer wheelwells. They also share rear axels so whatever applies to the Camaro also applies to Firebirds and Trans Ams !
Q: does anyone know of a person or car dealer selling a Pontiac firebird formula - years 1970 through 1973?
i want a formula firebird with a 400 cubic inch motor with an automatic trans. will consider 350 or 455 motors. do not want a rolling chassis and need to send pictures of car.
A: check eBay. That would probably be your best bet.
Thanks,

Q: where can I find a used pontiac firebird, around 1970's. I would like it to be around $1000.00?
I would like it to look fairly nice on the body of the car. It is for drag racing. If possible, maybe ,if any luck, it might be a complete car. I am looking for it in the areas of Yadkin County or the surrounding counties. I don't want it to be rusted out. Color really doesnt matter .
A: Check E-Bay
Q: Pontiac Transam which is better the 1970's Bandit Transam fire bird or 1980's Transam firebird?
What is the difference in engine?? Horsepower??
A: Many people forget the 400 cubic inch smogged up Buick Pontiac Olds motor only made 200 hp with a 4 bbl Carburetor. Then 1980's early fuel injected cars were not all that powerful either Cat converter single exhaust. A WS-6 Trans Am fire bird 1969 to 1970 big block 455 cubic inch is your best bet 6.6 liter. I recommend coming out to a Pontiac event. I saw a rather interesting modification a GM trailblazer engine trans in a 6 Cly fire bird. That aluminum in line 6 makes more power than a original cars V8 motor
Q: Why women dont understand the value of vintage and classic cars?
Why most of women dont understand or appreciate the value of vintage and classic cars, like if you want to restore one at home and your wife is daily complaining abut it beaing around and asking you to get rid of it and telling you instead of wasting money on your project buy a new car? why they dont understand for example the diffrence between an old great classic pontiac 1970 firebird and a new 2007 Toyota Yaris? my wife openion is the Yaris worth the money you pay and is the real car and the Firebird is a piece of junk, I wonder ???
A: I don't know, my wife's the same way. Ladies like fresh things like flowers and puppies and late model cars, maybe it has to do with their baby-making wiring?
Q: Which is the better investment - a 1963 thru '70 Chevy truck or a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am?
I currently own a '79 Trans Am. It is a solid rust-free car with numerous options and nice paint, but it's in need of a new engine (rod knock). I've been considering selling it off and buying a classic Chevrolet Pickup from 1963 to 1970 (i'm aware the body style changed from '63- '66 to '67-'70, but I like both styles).
I know the history of the Firebird, it would be a fairly easy restoration if I could find the time and money, but I could combine two hobbies of mine if I swapped it for a older pickup because in addition to a love of classic vehicles, I'm an avid ATV rider and it would be kinda neat to have an old truck to haul my quad.
BUT - would I wind up regretting a move like that? It seems like the value of Trans Am's jumped up quite a bit, and classic cars in general seem to outvalue classic trucks. Any opinions?
A: the truck would be a better investment ,because trucks always out sales cars, especially in an older model, the firebird is a nice car and so is the trans-am,but it wont out sale a nice truck,i had an old 66 Chevy truck that i had re-stored a few years ago,and just didn't drive it no more ,i sold it on e-bay ,for 24 k not to bad for an old Chevy truck, but they will out sale a car any day ,especially a Chevy or a ford, people like old trucks, always have and always will, the nicer the better they sale, good luck with it.

A: Whenwas the last time you saw a real man say "Oh my, look at those shoes, I've just got to have them".
Same theory.

A: She's a woman!!!! Very few women know that there is the boy in every man that will come out every day of his life! Very few women. We have our priorities and one of them is our toys. So what? You got a toy that can get you and your wife around. She doesn't understand. Her mother never taught her about the boy in the man.
Now of course no woman understands a man no more then a man could understand a woman. But there are things we should know about each other whether we understand them or not! One thing the wife should no is that we men have an excessive amount of TESTOSTERONE therefore we are alien to them. Or they are alien to us which ever suits your debate.
Now then there are women who understand the difference because there are exceptions to every rule. No man makes a good mother but then I actually do know of some men who do a better job of it then their wives; they are the exception to the rule.
Your wife lacks testosterone that's why she doesn't understand, it will always be that way it always has been that way and all the feminests in the world of the politically correct females/ shemales will not change this.
You don't have to understand a woman to know that she is not a male! Just accept it son.

A: Not ALL women fail to see the beauty of them, but, perhaps it's just that you're neglecting your equally beautiful wife in favour of the car thats causing the upset. Try involving her and treating her special sometimes, eh?
