Series), featured a Customized 1966 Pontiac GTO, with Blower. Mike Nesmith of the Monkees said, "We always drove new GTOs", "they were Fabulous True Muscle Cars in every sense of the word".
Popular Science July 1970 issue, article " The Supercars for the 70's are here", states cars; 1970 Pontiac Firebird 400, 1970 Dodge Challenger, and 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator are Super Cars.

Motor Trends Car of the Year- February 1965 issue, was pretty well all of the Pontiacs built in 1965!
A: While I agree with everything you posted, is there a question in there somewhere? ;)
Oh, and Robert: The Corvette was never a muscle car. The term came from a mid sized car with a full size engine. The Corvette was a sports car, but really in a category of its own when the really big motors came into play. And the hemis came later...
Q: how many 1964 pontiac GTO's ore regestered in the USA?
A: Great question! I have no idea, and no idea how to find out. But I have one undergoing a restoration, and will be registered for the first time in way more than 25 years very soon. I wonder how many are in barns, garages, etc awaiting restoration?
Q: First True Muscle Car; 1964 Pontiac GTO! So what is the second Muscle Car?
Fact; Authentic Original Muscle Car ERA was 1964 - 1972. Fact; 1964 Pontiac GTO is the Authentic Original "First True Muscle Car". 1957 Pontiac Chieftain 347, Tri-Power, 317 H.P. , factory, (John Zinc) was NHRA Top Stock Champion, but this was not considered a Muscle Car. The 1960 Pontiac Ventura 389 Super Duty was the fastest car in 1960, still not the first Muscle Car. In 1961 Hayden Proffitt did a 1/4 mile in 12.55 seconds @110.20 MPH, in a factory 1961 Pontiac Catalina 421 Super Duty, no still not a Muscle Car! Jim Wangers, in a factory 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 S.D. 1/4 mile in 12.38 seconds @ 116.32 MPH, still not a Muscle Car! Arnie Beswick, 1963 Pontiac Tempest Lemans 421 S.D. blew away the debut of the new 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 "Thunderbolts" 427(s) and new 1964 Dodge 426 HEMIS, still not the first Muscle Car! On Feb. 16, 1963 at Daytona Speed weeks, Challenge Cup 250, Paul Goldsmith defeated all GT entrants by over FIVE MILES, Corvette 427s, Cobras, 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO!
Therefore the Muscle Car ERA was from 1964 - 1972, and the First True Muscle Car was the 1964 Pontiac GTO! So what is the second Muscle Car?
1963 Pontiac Tempest Lemans 421 S.D., Arlen Vanke, did 1/4 mile in 11.89 seconds @ 123.28 MPH, factory! This was the Prototype for the new 1964 Pontiac GTO, developed with Pontiac Engineers! It had factory aluminum front end and cast aluminum manifold headers with factory dump valves! This was an "Anderson" (Knafel) 1963 Pontiac Tempest Lemans 421 Super Duty, named "Running Bear", still not the first Muscle Car!

The 1964 Pontiac GTO was the First True Muscle Car from 1964 on, it was announced on National News Broadcasts Officially in the 1990s. their are some who try to define what made the 1964 Pontiac GTO the First True Muscle Car, then try to find a car, and then try to strip away the 1964 Pontiac GTO's title. That's like saying Elvis wasn't the "King Of Rock and Roll", saying some one did it before him!?!?
So what was the second Muscle Car?
I see some great answers! There is no real arguement, the 1964 Pontiac was the First True Muscle Car! Sure there have been great cars in the past! However the Pontiac GTO was planned for a market of people requesting some one to make a High Performance Street Car! Pontiac, G.M. out of Factory Racing (1963), at a time Pontiac was dominating all Race Tracks, Pontiac built a High Performance Street Car for all, the 1964 Pontiac GTO, and the rest followed, and the rest was history!
Roger Huntington took accelerometer readings (true Power output directly from clutch), of a 1962 421 S.D/ 405 H.P. (11;1 comp. ratio) , his readings true actual Horse Power 465 H.P. & 510 ft/lbs of actual torque. In Car and Life Magazine, May 1965, Roger Huntington describes the 1965 Pontiac GTO 389/ 348 H.P. as a "SUPER CAR" (later the term Muscle Car was used to mean the same thing), first published article descibing any car in the World as a "Super Car", after taking accelerometer readings at the clutch of 345 real H.P. and 420 ft/lbs of real torque!
The 1964 Mustang 260 cid was the first "Pony" car. The 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 "Thunderbolt" 427 was a Factory 1/4 mile car, Pontiac built all sizes of that car before 1964, Ford was still trying to catch up to Pontiac, even though Pontiac was out of racing early 1963.
Trivia, first "PONY" car; 1964 Plymouth Barracuda - April 1, 1964 released to public, 1964 Ford Mustang April 17, 1964 released to public!?!? Sorry Ford Fanatics but it is a Fact!
Hint; Only three factory true Muscle Cars were released in 1965 one being the now highly popular 1965 Pontiac GTO!
Answers from - Bob the Mechanic, Firebird, and Inagadda are on the right track! One could or is Right!

Oldsmobile wanted a muscle car, they loved the idea, I'm sure if they could, would have probably built one before Pontiac, they quickly made a 330 cid version in 1964 however to follow the rules, it is said that they quickly dropped in a 425 cid engine till their 400 cid engine was ready in 1965.
The 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS 409, the 1960 Super Duty Pontiacs, 1962 Dodge 413, Chevy 327s, Dodge 340s, 360s are Muscle Cars in their own definition, they are all great cars. Pontiac though made the rules and those that followed respected them!

Later on in 1965 season Buick "Shoehorned" a 401 engine into a new 1965 Buick Gran Sport! The 1965 Buick Gran Sport 401 (or 400 cid) motor came with one four barrel or a optional 2X4 barrel option!
1966 Ford Fairlane 390, 427 cool car, made to catch the Tiger (Pontiac GTO), however it never did! close though!

A: First True Muscle Cars (1st) 1964 Pontiac GTO 389 cid or 421 cid, permission from G.M. to allow big car engine over 330 cid limit in an intermediate car. Trial period for the 1964 Pontiac GTO, hopefully they could sell around 5000 units to be successful. Q: Why is the 1967 - 1971 Plymouth "Belvedere" GTX, one of the "Greatest" True Muscle Cars ever?
The Plymouth GTX has got to be the Greatest True Muscle Car since the 1964 Pontiac GTO Kick Started the True Muscle Car Movement, why?
A: because all true GTX,s were all big block cars, and they was made available with the hemi in them from the time they came out it you wanted one in it,that was back in the power days and all car company's were trying to build the strongest muscle car they could, you wont find very many small block gtx,s,if its a true gtx it will have a h.p. 383 or a 440 or a hemi in it,i owned a 67 gtx with the 383 in it,in their time they was fast cars, there was faster cars than the Gtx,s,s we all know that but for what they was and for the price of them it was drag racing strait from the factory, mine was stock and would run with many of the other ones with larger engines,Chrysler had one before that even ,the 66 Plymouth sport satellite also came with all the big block engine options including the hemi option, good luck.
Q: Which are the 10 most significant cars of all time?
Mine would be (in no particular order)
Ford Model T - put the world on wheels.
Volkswagen Beetle (the original, of course) - The best selling, single generation model in automotive history.
Chevrolet Corvette - The ultimate American sports car. Still in the market after 53 years. Currently on par with the best exotics for a fraction of the price.
Porsche 911 - The perennial best sports car.
Mazda Miata - Singlehandedly revived the roadster. Without the Miata, there would be no BMW Z3 or Z4, no Audi TT cabrio, no Porsche Boxster, no Mercedes-Benz SLK, et al.
Willys-Overland Jeep - The forefather of all SUVs. Plus, it saved the world from tyranny.
Mini Cooper (again, the original, of course) - Transversely mounted FWD engine configuration forever changed automotive industry.
1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL - The first exotic car.
1964 Pontiac GTO - Unleashed the muscle car era, forever defining the sixities.
Mazda Cosmo - First mass produced rotary engined car.
A: In my book, the order (1 is best, 10 is not-so good) is the following:
1. McLaren F1 (it STILL is the ultimate hypercar, even though it's 13 years young, hehe - incredible engine BMW V12, incredible engineerign by Gordon Murray)
2. Porsche 911 Lineage (every single model is iconic for the history of the automobile - one of the most coveted sports-cars in the world)
3. Audi S2 (or E2, the beast of the B-group in the 1980s, being the culmination of the entire quattro revolution)
4. VW Golf GTi (-except for the Mark 4- for truly being the people's sports car)
5. Ford Model T (for revolutionising mass automobile production)
6. Pontiac GTO (first edition-for the obvious reason of STILL being the iconic American muscle-car)
7. Chevrolet Corvette Lineage (for being, as you said, the iconic American sports-car)
8. Ford 32 Coupe (for sparking the entire hot-rod revolution)
9. Mercedes S-Klasse Lineage (for being the term of comparison in the luxury range)
10. Lotus Elise (for being a true lightweight, high revving, perfectly-handling, no bull sports car)
Come to think of it, I guess I could've included a dozen more cars (I haven't mentioned any Japanese ones, SUV's), but... I guess this Top 10 will do! This was the first thing that popped into my head so, it must mean that these cars really left an impression on me. Cheers!
Q: Need Help with Transmission Difference's?
Hi, I have a 1964 Pontiac GTO and it has a 455ci Motor Hook-up to a Automatic Turbo 350 Transmission. I was wondering the difference was between my Turbo 350 and a TH 350 Transmission. Beacuse I am looking for an After-Market Shifter either a B&M or Hurst. My email address is jay_db_@yahoo.com Thanks for yall's Help, James Barlow
A: a th350 and the turbo 350 are one and the same transmission. the th and turbo is short for turbohydramatic. but because you are running a 455, i would consider installing a th 400 transmission in your car. by far it is a stronger trans. there will be some conversion but its not to tough
Q: Third True Muscle Car, 1965 Buick GS, what does GS mean? What cid was the 400 really?
1965 Buick GS 400cid, Third True Muscle car after the First- 1964 Pontiac GTO and Second 1965 Oldsmobile 442. What does GS mean and what is the real displacement of the 400 cid engine in a 1965 Buick GS?
Suhrim S, you know it! 1965 Buick GS 400 cid or really a 401 cid "Gran Sport" is Correct! When it comes to Super Car, Muscle Car knowledge you know the 1965 Buick GS! Great Answer!
A: GS is Gran Sport
It came stock with a 401 cid block
Q: Second True Muscle Car, 1965 Oldsmobile 442, What does 442 in 1965 mean? What two engines were used in 1965?
1965 Oldsmobile 442, two engines factory in 1965, Second True Muscle Car (after the First- 1964 Pontiac GTO). What does 442 mean in 1965? What are two factory engines found in 1965 Oldsmobile 442?
This is a tough one, two (questions). The original 1964 Oldsmobile 442, 330 cid meant 4 speed, 4 barrel, and dual exhaust. In 1965 the Oldsmobile 442 had a different meaning and different engine before their new 400 cid engine, and after their 1964 330 cid engine.
"Suhrim S", great try, it's 442; 400 cid, 4 barrel, dual exhaust. "eldorado..." that is it , 425 cid first engine in the 1965 Oldsmobile 442, till the new "De-Bored 425 cid", 400 cid engine took over in 1965. SEE; Chrysler300country.com, click on Chrysler 300, then click on Full table of Contents, click on Olsmobile 442, then read 1965... Also at; Olds FAQ -- 442, click on 1965 and read...
A: Oh Bob, what about the 425 offered in "65". 442 was an option pkg offered by Olds like Chevy offered the SS pkg.Delorean offered the Pontiac GTO in 1964 as the first Wide track but the first muscle car was the 1961 SS Impala with a 409 in it. It was the shortest, lightest wheel base Chevy offered and was an instant hit on both the dragstrip as well as the round track. Oh yea, the 2 eng. used in 1965 were the 400, and 425
Q: The GTO started life as . . .?
As we all know, the GTO started out as a sport package for this car from Pontiac in 1964, now, the question is, which car came with the GTO option package prior to the GTO becoming it's own vehicle in 1965?
Grand Trurismo Omologato is what the letters GTO stand for, please, do not give me that answer again.
The Plymouth Fury is a definite NEGATIVE!! The muscle car era DID NOT begin in the 50's, but the mid 60's . . . the Fury DID NOT start life as the first true muscle car, the muscle on the Fury was a package that changed the name to Fury III . . . thought I didn't know that, did you?
A: JOHN DELOREN made the GTO it was HIS idea!!
It would take a person who owns a fake GTO "above" (the new GTOs are built by the Aussies and have a chevy engine, it's an import with a chevy engine, how is that a Pontiac or even a GTO?) to say that.
Grand Turismo Omologato, or even Gas Tires Oil , is what GTO is. The first GTO was officially put out in late 1963 as a special version of the Tempest. However the first gen GTO would appear in 1964 as an option for the LeMans.
It started with a Tempest option but turned into a LeMans option.1966 was the first year for the GTO to be a full-fledged model, in 1972 it turned back into a LeMans option till it was killed in 1974.
Real GTOs have Pontiac Engines, you cant slap a 3M sticker on a import with a chevy engine and call it a GTO. The Pontiac GTO started the muscle car, it's an American Legend. Those who own the bastard import have NEVER been accepted in GTO circles, and never will be.
Hope this clears up your question.
Q: She wan't to go top-less everywhere, I think it is too dangerous and would ruin the fun. What do I do?
She drives this killer 1964 & 1/2 Tempest LeMans (GTO) Pontiac with a 389 & tri-pack, rag-top, leather. She wants to go top-less EVERYWHERE! But I'm afraid it would ruin the leather. Is there any hope to preserve the car?
A: its her car isnt it?....
Q: What are today's muscle cars? When I was growing up, they were:?
Ford Mustang - My personal fav - I had a purple painted Pony with white bucket seats - SWEET!!!
Pontiac GTO: The Great One - The one that started it all!
Buick Wildcat, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet El Camino, Chevrolet Impala (giddyap, my 409), Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger (General Lee), Dodge Daytona (200 MPH!), Ford Thunderbird, Mercury Cougar, Oldsmobile 442, Oldsmobile Toronado, Plymouth "Cuda, Plymouth GTX, Plymouth Road Runner, Plymouth Superbird, Pontiac Firebird, Pontiac Grand Prix...
The strict definition only includes intermediate size vehicles. In reality, performance oriented intermediate size vehicles didn't appear until 1964. Before then, manufacturers took existing fullsize vehicles and added extra performance to them. Because of this, the early fullsize performance vehicles are generally considered muscle cars.
A: Well my favorite description of a Muscle Car is a fast car that a young person can afford! That's why they made all of those cars, Mustangs, Chevelles,Cudas, etc. Back in the day a young person in the early 20's could not afford a Corvette. Same thing today. The Mustang would be a modern muscle car. Id say under 30 grand. Some other cars with some potential would be a WRX, Evo (are they under 30?) SRT4 stopped ma-ken them though Fbody stopped them. Though I guess for under 30 grand you couldn't get a modern GTO! Which is faster handles better, with even better mileage then the original. Its somthing to think about at least.
