Q: Where can I find this 1968 Pontiac GTO part? Thermostatic Vacuum Control Swithch?
AC Delco part number 3042954 can not be found on the internet and that is the mfg and the part number of the orignal one. I've looked and looked on the internet and have found 0 results. That is why I'm turning to Yahoo Answers. My father-in-law, who will be 73 this week, misses driving his car even tho he only takes it out on special occasions......... someone help please.........!!

A: Go to http://www.amesperf.com and download the GTO catalogue. They have some thermostatic vacuum controllers. They go on the intake manifold in the coolant passage on the passengers side of the thermostat housing. It will have three vacuum lines that go to it. One is for full manifold vacuum and the others go to the distributor and the transmission vacuum modulator. It only allows vacuum to go to those when the engine reaches a predetermined temperature. If you search for "pontiac GTO vacuum diagram" you will see the switch and exactly where the lines will go. Alot of pontiac owners disconnected that switch and ran their own vacuum lines. It was meant for emissions control. Herwe is the Firebird diagram http://firstgenfirebird.org/SearchResults.html?cx=005182571696200159786%3Agx40kxnoxf0&q=vacuum&sa=Search+FGF&cof=FORID%3A9#938 I hope that helps.

Q: 1968 pontiac gto details?
can anone give me the factory specification, accessories, pros and cons, special fittings etc and any other details u know about 1968 pontiac gto????

A: I've got 3 goats so I know. the base model was a 3 speed manual, the muncie and th400 were options, as was ram air, hood tach, hideaway headlights, ac, rear defroster, pwr stearing and power brakes, you could get a 2 bbl carb ( pretty rare, in 69 only 1200 or so were made like this and I have one), 8 track tape, convertable, also could be ordered with wonder touch stearing, ride and handling package, heavy duty radiator, and contary to ignorant opinions, the only engine from the factory was the 400, the bobcat option of switching the 400 for a 428 was done by the dealer and not the factory, it was a service replacement (sr) block. Auto with ac was a 3:23 rear end. manual generally came with a 3:55 rear, but a 3:90 or 4:33 could be ordered. The cars with 4:33's are prob more rare than the judges, and were factory drag cars. There is alot more so I'll leave it at this.

Q: Did the 1968 pontiac gto 400ci have a posi trac rear end?

A: As a rule of thumb, musclecars did NOT come with limited slip standard. Even Hemis had them as an option. Of course, there were some ratios that were only available as limited slip, such as 3.90s. And, of course, the Ram Air cars that came standard with digger gears (1967-68 RAI, 1968 RAII, and 1969-70 RAIV) had limited slip required. And just in case you don't know, the 1968 GTO only came with a 400.

Q: Who had the most Famous 1968 Pontiac GTO, with factory 428 Pontiac GTO engine?
1968 Pontiac GTO 428, Factory Pontiac Power. In 1968 the 400 cid was the standard engine, but there were options. Who is the Famous person who owned one of these Rare 1968 Pontiac GTO with 428 cid engine? Starting in at least 1962 when Pontiac released the 421 Super Duty, it came factory with 2X4 barrel carbs, and 1/4 mile time of 13.07 seconds, however TO AVOID DELAY IN THEIR PRODUCTION LINE anyone requiring more power factory could do so at any Factory Authorized Upgrade Pontiac Dealership. Were do you think Pontiac Dealerships got upgrades for Pontiac Performance? 421 Super Duty parts at the Aftermarket Drag Racing Store!?!? Every Pontiac Dealership offered Authorized Factory Performance upgrades for any Pontiac 326, 389 and 421 S.D., such as Bill Barry Pontiac, Anderson Pontiac, Knafel Pontiac and built winning factory race cars, Royal Pontiac, "Bobcat", just added more flash to their factory Upgrades! Later on, after 1964, Pontiac would upgrade any car for racing as long as you didn't tell anyone, because G.M. was out of Racing. As for factory engine options it was a definate go ahead!

A: Yea, the 428 was a popular upgrade among the drag racer set, but was never offered from the factory - at least not out the front door! My guess who owned it? Arnie Beswick, Jim Wangers, John Delorean, Jay Leno, Me... Am I in there somewhere?

Q: i have a 1968 pontiac gto i am looking for some suggestions to boost up the horsepower?
it is a stock 400 ci engine

A: i highly recomend "Jim Hands Pontiac Performance Engines" it will tell you everything you need to know. That motor has a ton of potential. from mild to wild. the cheapest thing to do would be to go with the power package from edelbrock. heads, cam, headers etc. also check out http://www.geocities.com/RAMairGTO72/ this guy has a sweet goat and some good engine recipes

Q: what is a good header choice for a 1968 pontiac gto?

A: I agree the stock type are best. Try a set of ram air ones. http://www.ramairrestoration.com/catalog/

A: A 68 GTO is a highly prized collector car. There's no such thing as a cheap one.

Q: Can anyone give me the exact detailed specification of a 1968 PONTIAC GTO?
I want details of 1. Engine spec 2. Body dimn 3. Interior specialities 4. Engine specialities and additions that can be made 5. heard that it had a hurst shifter. if i buy one, what special things must i look for pour in all the details u have coz i'm frm india nd i'm planning to buy one which is so difficult as there are obnly a handful in india and that i have to import it. plz help

A: I can take a crack at this one for you! =) 1.) The standard engine was a 400 cubic inch V-8 that put out 350 BHP (horsepower measured and the brakes, not the wheels). There was also options of a 265 BHP version, along with a 360 BHP version. 2.) The wheelbase measured 112.0 in (2845 mm), and total body leght was 200.5 in (5093 mm). 3.) The interior to my knowledge came in 3 options. Red, black and off white/cream colored leather. 1968 was also the last year the GTO's offered separate vent, or "wing", windows and were the only year for crank operated vent windows. 4.) If you are meaning aftermarket parts, the 400 SB (small block) has a ton of aftermarket support. A good place to start would be a GTO community forum. Try here: http://gtoheavenforum.yuku.com/ They can tell you ANYTHING you would ever want to know about GTO's. 5.) The "Hurst Shifter" you heard about was a transmission that was added to the GTO line in 1967. It replaced the older 2 speed transmission and was a 3 speed. It is called the Turbo-Hydramatic TH-400. It was equipped with a Hurst Performance Dual-Gate shifter, called a "his/hers" shifter, that let it shift automatically (hers), while in Drive, or manually shifting through the gears yourself (his), by selecting a new gear when RPM's approached the redline. Mine has this, but I would opt for the 4 speed manual transmission. Some things to look for when wanting to buy a classic car like this are, body/frame rust, interior condition, paint condition, and if it has one, the condition of a convertible or other soft top roof. Options that came on them to watch out for include, the hood mounted tachometer, the Ram Air package (Ram Air II, it included better flowing cylinder heads, rounded exhaust ports and the 041 camshaft). Probably the rarest option for the 1968 GTO was a set disc brakes up front with 4 piston calipers. They provided much better stopping power than the standard 4 wheel drum brakes.

Q: Did Pontiac make a GTO in 1968 with a?
did pontiac make gto's in 1968 with 389 ci. eng. with a manual 3 speed hurst or muncie shift package?

A: Respondants indicating that 1968 GTO's were only available with the 400 are correct. The three speed manual was actually the base choice in a GTO. Pontiac charged more for the upgrade to the 4 spd and automatic. Nearly all GTO's have the higher option transmissions. If your Goat was delivered with a three speed transmission, it did have a hurst manufactured shifter, but was not stamped "HURST" in the shifter lever as the four speed and the dual gate automatic hurst shifters were in large letters.
